Ways to Encourage Grandkids to Read

Grandparents want to see their grandkids spend more time reading. It is one of the most important activities you can do together. In this article, let’s give you some tips on how to make the most of this special time and how to encourage kids to read.

  • Read aloud to them

  • Start a grandparent-child book club

  • Offer book bags that will encourage them to read

  • Provide access to many good books

  • Ask them to accompany you to visit the library and bookstore

  • Attend Storytime in the library

  • Start creating a cozy reading nook with a comfortable chair, reading lamps, and books on the bookshelves.

  • Daily call them for a reading activity or you can also read silently via video call.

  • Ask grandkids to read for you. Even if it means reading the pictures and making up stories according to the images.

  • Discuss a particular book they love. Talk to them about what is it about and why they like the story.

  • Find books that are relevant to their interest. If they love beaches, find a good book cover about the ocean.

Be A Role Model

Don’t miss the opportunity to share your reading hobby with your grandkids. Be a role model for them. If you are living near, let them see you are doing this activity. Talk to them about some interesting topics you’ve read or talk to them over the phone. Your grandkids will love you for that. Keep in mind that you love them enough to share the wonderful gift of reading.
